Financial Need

Most federal student aid is awarded on the basis of financial need.  Need is the difference between the cost of education (i.e., education expenses, such as tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies, and other related expenses) and the amount the student and the student’s family is expected to contribute toward that education.  A standard formula used for all applicants determines this amount, which is called the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) or Family Contribution (FC).  The amount remaining after subtracting the expected contribution from the cost of education is considered the applicant’s financial need.

Federal Pell Grant

The maximum Federal Pell Grant award for the 2010-2011 award year will be $5,550.  The award amount is based on the U.S. Department of Education’s determination of the student’s need.  The amount actually received depends on the student’s Pell Grant index number, the cost of education at the college and whether the student is enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis.  Management and oversight of this program rest with the Financial Aid Administrator. Disagreements between the student and the FAA’s decisions rest with the owner upon written request from the student.
